Why do you run? Are you training for a race? Is it your way of enjoying the outdoors? Maybe it’s a stress reliever. No matter your reason, running should be something you look forward to in the morning, right? Three Tips for Proper Running Form
Running Form: Posture!
Admit it. Your parents were correct. Sitting up at the dinner table is not only good manners, but also builds your foundation for being an incredible and capable runner.
When you run with correct posture, you run tall, with your body aligned feeling balanced. This helps you relax while you run and and is THE precursor for all other aspects of your running form.
Running Form: Cadence!
You may not be the best dancer, but finding a good (and trust us) basic rhythm will help you run farther and faster, all while maintaining a sense of feeling light and quick!
On your next run, count how many times your right foot hits the ground in 60 seconds. If it is under 90, think about shortening your stride just a little or increasing your cadence.
Running Form: Footstrike!
Somewhere along the way we have started to pass moral judgement on how a runner’s foot strikes the ground. Are you a heel striker (tsk..tsk)? Or are you fortunate enough to strike on your mid foot (phew!)?
So here’s what we think: You don’t even need to think about footstrike. Not at all. If you first focus on proper posture, running tall, leading with the hips, and you keep a consistent cadence over 90 steps per minute, your feet will naturally land underneath you where they are meant to land. That’s it.
