Cody coach Darrell Michnowicz has helped inspire thousands to explore their movement potential through calisthenics and bodyweight training. Thanks to an ever-evolving relationship with movement, Darrell’s vision is to open people’s eyes to the fact that their bodies are capable of doing more than they could ever imagine.
“The biggest inspiration to me is watching others grow, dig deep, and reach their goals by trying new things,” says Darrell.
Darrell was drawn to many forms of movement from a young age. Whether he was riding a bike or playing a sport, he was rarely sedentary and was always looking for more ways to move.
“My whole life I have been curious about movement. I always wondered, ‘How can I move better? Or ‘How can I move differently?’” he says.
For Darrell, functional movement allows his body and mind to remain in sync with one another. “When I move, I feel a therapeutic mind and body connection that allows me to relax and focus,” he says.
Walking the Line
In addition to activities such as soccer, bodybuilding, and calisthenics, Darrell has taken up slacklining as his current movement of choice. While he never thought he would be able to walk a tightrope, over time, his skill level has improved and he has seen the benefits in other areas of his life.
“The first couple of months I was on the line, my only thought was ‘Don’t fall.’ As I’ve gotten better, it helps me focus on other things too,” he says.
Taking on the challenge of learning the slackline has completely transformed Darrell’s training methods along with his mindset.
“It started out as just a line. It was just a tightrope. Except now, it’s a lot more than that to me. It has transformed my approach to training. Your body is never going to be able to do the same movement twice because the slackline isn’t going to allow you to. I guarantee that. When you’re actually on the slackline and you’re manipulating this line, at certain points you are literally weightless,” he says.
Moving Without Fear
Darrell draws most of his inspiration from helping others learning how to move their bodies without fear. In a world that is saturated with images of advanced movements thanks to social media, Darrell encourages people to enjoy the process of discovering new movements, instead of focusing on the final product.
“It’s very easy to get caught up in people posting these advanced things they are doing and you think that they got them overnight, but that’s not the case. This is a whole process. What people don’t see is all the hard work that goes into it. All of the practice, and overcoming frustrations,” he says.
For Darrell, the benefits of movement, and moving beyond fear extend far beyond the physical.
“You’re going to feel better, your self-esteem is going to be higher, you’re doing to connect with new people you wouldn’t have met before…and this all stems from movement.”
