Power yoga- what is it?

How is Power yoga different from other types of yoga?
Power yoga is a style that did not originate from India, but rather, is a modern North American combination of traditional yoga with North America’s own standards of physical exertion. Power yoga is a more vigorous form of yoga practice that emphasizes strength building movements and more lively Vinyasa flows. Power yoga is a relatively new form of yoga that is recognized by a few different names and features.
Power yoga, which is also sometimes called Vinyasa Yoga, is derived from Ashtanga yoga, (the full name is Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga). “Vinyasa” is the alignment of movement with breath during yoga, and is what turns singular, static yoga poses into complete yoga flow sequences. Traditional Vinyasa flow sequences can range from relaxing to strenuous.
Should You Try Power Yoga?
Chances are, if you have previous experience with Hatha Yoga, the most common type of yoga that’s been spread among the Western world, you will already be familiar with many of the basic power yoga poses; such as Chaturanga (lowering yourself down from plank to the ground), or Warrior 1. Different instructors will get creative with different yoga poses, flows, and variations to transform a traditional yoga flow into a strengthening power yoga flow.
Whether or not you should try power yoga depends on your fitness goals. If your goal is to reduce muscle aches & pains and relax, then no, power yoga is not for you. However, if your goal is to build strength through low-impact exercise, then power yoga would be perfect for you. Power yoga is also a great way for power-lifters and athletes to have a nice, balanced “rest day” activity.
